This article will give you an overview of how small business grants operate in England and Wales, where to find them, and how to prepare your grant application.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is a Business Grant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A grant is a gift of money that a recipient must use for a specific purpose. Usually, the donor of the money is a local authority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the money is not used for its intended purpose, the donor can \u201cclaw it back.\u201d This phrase is another way of saying the donor can legally require you to return the money. However, there is no legal obligation on you to use the money for a specific purpose, which is one of the distinguishing features of a grant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"box box--icon box--info\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you use the money for a specific purpose, you do not have to pay it back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, grants may be available for a fixed period, and each grant may have different criteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other kinds of money available for small businesses include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">finance;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.uk\/corporations\/difference-between-debt-and-equity-investment\/\">equity<\/a>;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">loans;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">expertise and advice; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recognition awards.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Key Elements of a Grant\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Generally, if you receive a business grant, it will have the following elements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the donor will give your business money that you can use to meet specific objectives, like upgrading your business\u2019 IT infrastructure;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the money will not be used in a way that directly benefits the donor;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you have the option of using the money for the intended purpose or returning the money without any fees;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the donor, such as a local authority, will be obligated to pay you the money if you are awarded the grant; and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you will have to return any surplus money to the donor.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What Qualifies as a Small Business?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The UK Government breaks businesses into the following categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not yet trading;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.uk\/startups\/startup-public-private\/\">startups<\/a> (1-2 years trading); or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">established.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"box box--icon box--info\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In general, your revenue (or \u201cturnover\u201d) is not factored into which of the three stages your business is in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have not yet engaged suppliers or sold any goods or services to customers or clients, then you would be classified as \u201cnot yet trading.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Likewise, if you have been active for less than two years, you will likely qualify as a startup.
