You must control access, comply with data protection laws and ensure staff understand their obligations to avoid breaches and legal exposure.\u00a0 This article explains what workplace confidentiality is, the types of information it covers and how you can protect it effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is Confidential Information?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Confidential information is information which is:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not commonly known and in the public domain;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has value and importance; and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">if revealed, would have a detrimental effect on the business or positively impact a competitor.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For information to be considered of value and importance:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the value does not need to be in terms of financial, monetary or commercial importance; and&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">it must be developed and identifiable, rather than vague.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is Confidential Information in the Workplace?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any confidential information you come into as part of your business is subject to workplace confidentiality. You may have your employees\u2019 personal information, such as their address and bank details.
