Your partner must have an eligible immigration status or nationality. You normally need to meet the Home Office\u2019s relationship, financial, English language and accommodation requirements. Unmarried partners can qualify without having lived together throughout their relationship. However, they must normally show a relationship similar to marriage or civil partnership lasting at least two years before applying. This article explains who can apply, the evidence you need, application costs and how the partner route can lead to settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Can Apply for a UK Partner Visa?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may be able to apply if your partner has a qualifying nationality or immigration status. Check their status first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A family partner visa is different from a dependant visa linked to temporary work or study permission. The correct route depends on your circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/uk-family-visa\/partner-spouse\">Home Office\u2019s partner visa guidance<\/a> identifies these eligible partners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>British or Irish citizens;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people settled in the UK, meaning they can live here without a time limit;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>qualifying European nationals with pre-settled status, meaning temporary permission under the EU Settlement Scheme;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people with a Turkish Worker or Turkish Businessperson visa;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people with protection status, meaning refugee permission or humanitarian protection; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people granted permission as stateless before you became their partner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div  class=\"box box--icon box--warning\">\n    <p>Not every person with pre-settled status can sponsor a partner through this route. The relevant European national must have started living in the UK before 1 January 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You and your partner must normally both be aged 18 or over. Your relationship must be genuine and subsisting. This means real and continuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must intend to live together permanently in the UK. If your partner has a temporary work or student visa, you may instead need to apply as their dependant. The <a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.uk\/corporate-immigration\/skilled-worker-salary\/\">Skilled Worker visa route<\/a> has separate rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do You Prove Your Relationship?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must show that your relationship is genuine and continuing. The evidence depends on whether you are married, civil partners or unmarried partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Home Office considers your circumstances and relationship evidence together. The Home Office must also be satisfied that any previous relationships have permanently ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div  class=\"box box--icon box--info\">\n    <p>Include your marriage or civil partnership certificate and documents confirming the end of any previous marriage or civil partnership.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unmarried Partners<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to be married or in a civil partnership to qualify. Unmarried partners must normally show a relationship similar to marriage or civil partnership lasting at least 2 years before applying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to have lived together throughout that period. You may have lived separately because of work, study, cultural reasons or immigration restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explain why you lived apart and how you maintained your commitment. Evidence may include shared financial commitments, travel together and regular communication.
