If you discriminate, such as through disability discrimination, you put your business at risk of potential problems. They include discrimination claims at an employment tribunal, and possible poor workplace relationships and less engagement with other employees. This article will explain discrimination by association and the legal implications for business owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Discrimination in the Workplace?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a person is mistreated in the workplace based on a protected characteristic, this is <a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.uk\/employment\/employment-discrimination\/\">workplace discrimination<\/a>. There are nine protected characteristics which are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.uk\/employment\/race-discrimination-workplace\/\">race<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gender;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/legalvision.co.uk\/employment\/age-discrimination\/\">age<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>religion or belief;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disability;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>marriage or civil partnership;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pregnancy or maternity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gender reassignment; and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sexual orientation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Discrimination by Association?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Discrimination by association in the workplace is also a form of workplace discrimination and a type of direct discrimination. It occurs when a person is treated unfairly because of their association with another with a protected characteristic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is often, for example, their:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>spouse;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>partner;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>child;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>parent;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>friend; or&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>peer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is essential to note that discrimination by association can arise when the person with the protected characteristic they associate with is not a close associate.
